![]() ![]() ![]() But no one should be getting mad when this music gets viewed like this in a setting like a talk show. There are certainly places for it, in Brooklyn, Bushwick Public House Monday nights has become a sort of torch bearer as of a few years ago (and there’s obviously The Stone although that isn’t exactly active right now). The casual listener just does not like that music and if you’re going to play it or listen to it, you need to come to that realization. I’ve turned all those gigs down personally because if it was me at the park going for a stroll on my day off with my family, the last thing I would want to do is hear 5 dudes playing free jazz while I’m just trying to play frisbee with my kids. Here in NYC since Covid, my friends and I have gotten many calls for outdoor gigs at parks like Prospect Park to play mostly free music. Like you really think the casual listener is gonna sit down and listen to cats play extended techniques for an hour and be like “yeah cool”? I like Brotzmann, I’m not a Fallon fan.īut it seems to me that musicians that play the more out shit, as well as fans that listen to it, have a VERY unrealistic expectation of how that music is/should be received in popular culture. I’m a musician, I often work in free improvisation settings. ![]() Sigh, unpopular opinion I guess but here goes: ![]()
